ANZIO: OFFENSIVE AND BREAKOUT!
CIRCA FEBRUARY-MAY 1944
Camp Roberts, California; June 3-5, 2005
Scenario: The scenarios will be based upon the Anzio Campaign, circa February-May 1944. The battle will take place at Training Areas Tango and Uniform. For further information, please contact Walt Hanna at (818) 343-6811.
Directions: Camp Roberts is located north of Paso Robles on the west side of Highway 101. Look for the Camp Roberts exit sign and cross over the 101. Enter the main gate and look for CHG signage directing you to the barracks.
Arrival Time: Participants may arrive at any time after 1:00 PM on Friday, June 3. The security is still at “Threatcon Bravo” currently, so please expect the same security at the gate as we experienced at last October’s battle. You’ll need to check in at the MP office adjacent to the gate and let the MP’s examine your re-enactment weaponry. Live ammunition and civilian weaponry are strictly prohibited by Camp Roberts and CHG Rules (CHG’s penalty is immediate expulsion and possible federal felony charges by the National Guard), so unless you’re a sworn peace officer required to carry your sidearm “24/7,” don’t even think about bringing such live ammo and weapons! Peace officers and CCW holders may check their weapon at the gate, as they did last time, but even this is highly discouraged. Following the check-in, you should receive a placard for your car’s dash which will speed re-entry should you go into town. After off‑loading your equipment into the barracks, your vehicle must be moved at least 50 feet from any nearby structure. Parking adjacent to the barracks will not be permitted after off-loading at this event! Do so and you may get a federal parking ticket from the MP’s.
Battle Fee : The battle fee will be .00 for CHG members or members of other CHG-recognized WWII re-enactment groups, plus 2005 CHG dues if not paid previously.
Housing Accommodations: We will draw barracks for accommodations. We’ve asked for seven barracks this time and they will not be “reservable,” but are available on a “first come, first serve” basis. However, barracks capacity of 350 will be more than adequate on a share and share alike basis. Those wishing to get individual rooms (billets) should call (805) 238-8312. If you won’t arrive before 4:30 p.m. on Friday, it is critical that you call ahead and reserve your billet. Keys to your billet will be left in the “lock box” on the porch of the Billeting Office. Cost of billets is currently .50 per night, but may be increased without notice. PLEASE NOTE: Units may also bivouac “in the field” at the site at their discretion.
Meals and Water: Meals are on your own at the barracks. Although we will bring some water to the sites, be prepared for a “dry” site and bring plenty of water and one or two canteens. Period field rations should be brought by each participant for meals during the scenario.
Authenticity: Battle uniforms and equipment should be appropriate for Allied and Axis Forces for February-May 1944 for the Anzio Campaign.
Military Vehicles: We will have the ability to use MV’s in the scenarios at the sites. All CHG members bringing their MV’s will have their battle fees waived. All MV’s must be parked on the westerly side of Washington Boulevard (the north-south street adjacent to our barracks) and at least 10 yards back from the edge of the road! They may not be parked adjacent to the barracks! Vehicles who do will receive a federal parking ticket from the MP’s.
Weapons Rental: Bill Guiette is tentatively planning to attend the battle, although Gary Harper may cover the battle in his place if Bill is unable to attend. Please call Bill at (619) 449-1571 to reserve your rental weapon.
Line-Up and Inspections: Line-up both days will be at 7:30 AM SHARP! (buy your blanks from Matt Charapata the night before if possible!). Safety and authenticity inspections will be made during the line-up. UNIT LEADERS PLEASE NOTE: Walt Hanna would like to have a pre-line-up meeting with all unit leaders at 9 PM Friday night at a location to be announced by him.
Battle Times: Scenarios will begin both days as soon as troops arrive at the site and deploy and will continue to 4:00-5:00 pm on Saturday and noon-1:00 PM on Sunday.
Sanitary Facilities : None at the site, so bring E-tools and T.P.
Further Information: For further information about this event, please call Walt Hanna at the number given above. In addition, updates of this event will be given on the CHG Hotline at (714) 239-9911 and the CHG website as follows: http://www.chgww2.com.
Emergency Contact: Although Camp Roberts will be largely shut down during the weekend, emergency phone calls may be directed to the MP station at (805) 238-8191 with a request to contact the individual at his assigned barracks or billet (mention CHG re-enactment participation).
